Masam Project Removes 961 Mines in Yemen Within One Week
Aden — The King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center’s (KSrelief) “Masam” project revealed that its specialized demining teams successfully removed 961 mines and explosive devices from Yemeni territory during the fourth week of November 2025.
According to the project’s statement, the cleared devices included:
- 6 anti-personnel mines
- 92 anti-tank mines
- 862 unexploded ordnance (UXO)
- 1 improvised explosive device (IED)
This latest clearance brings the total number of mines removed in November to 4,726, and the overall tally since the project’s launch in June 2018 to more than 526,460 devices.
The mines, planted indiscriminately across Yemen’s towns, villages, and farmlands, have caused widespread devastation.
Thousands of civilians including children, women, and the elderly have been killed or maimed by these hidden explosives. The contamination of agricultural land and residential areas continues to pose a grave humanitarian challenge, preventing displaced families from returning safely to their homes.
Security experts note that Yemen remains one of the most heavily mined countries in the world, with estimates suggesting that Houthi militias have laid between one and two million mines nationwide.
The Masam project, staffed by international and Yemeni specialists, has become a cornerstone of efforts to mitigate this threat, combining technical expertise with humanitarian outreach.
Officials at KSrelief emphasized that the project’s mission is not only to clear mines but also to restore hope and safety for Yemeni communities.
By reclaiming contaminated land, Masam enables farming, trade, and daily life to resume in areas once rendered uninhabitable.
Humanitarian observers warn, however, that the scale of contamination means the work is far from over.
With new mines reportedly being planted in active conflict zones, sustained international support and funding remain critical to ensure that Yemen’s future is not permanently scarred by explosive remnants of war.
