Al-Mahra — Security forces in Yemen’s eastern Al-Mahra governorate have arrested two individuals accused of engaging in cyber blackmail against women and girls, according to a statement issued by local authorities on Wednesday.

The suspects were apprehended following a coordinated investigation by the Cybercrime Unit, which tracked online threats and extortion attempts involving private images and personal data. Authorities said the two men used social media platforms and messaging apps to lure victims, obtain sensitive content, and then threaten to publish it unless payments were made.

“The arrests are part of ongoing efforts to combat digital crimes and protect the dignity and privacy of citizens, especially women and minors,” a security official in Al-Mahra stated. He added that the suspects are currently in custody and will be referred to the Public Prosecution for further legal action.

The case has sparked renewed calls for stronger cybercrime legislation and public awareness campaigns in Yemen, where online harassment and digital exploitation have become increasingly common amid limited legal protections and digital literacy.
