Houthis Suspend UN Flight Permits Between Safer ــ Aden, Disrupting Humanitarian Operations
Aden – Houthi authorities have reportedly suspended United Nations flight permits between the Safer area in Ma’rib governorate and Yemen’s interim capital, Aden, until November 25, causing significant disruption to the movement of UN personnel and humanitarian missions operating across the country.
According to sources familiar with the matter, the suspension affects scheduled air transport used by UN agencies to facilitate staff rotations, field assessments, and emergency response coordination between northern and southern regions. The decision has raised concerns among aid organizations about the impact on time-sensitive operations and access to vulnerable communities.
UN officials have not publicly commented on the reasons behind the suspension, but observers suggest it may be part of broader political and logistical tensions between the Houthis and international actors. The move comes amid growing restrictions on humanitarian access in Houthi-controlled areas, including delays in travel permits and interference with relief activities.
“This suspension undermines the neutrality and effectiveness of humanitarian work,” said one aid coordinator. “It hampers coordination and delays critical interventions in areas where needs are urgent.”
The Safer-Aden air corridor has been a vital link for humanitarian agencies navigating Yemen’s fragmented geography and conflict zones. The temporary halt is expected to affect dozens of staff movements and planned missions in the coming weeks.
Humanitarian groups are urging all parties to respect operational independence and facilitate unhindered access to populations in need, especially as Yemen continues to face one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises.
