SHABWA — More than 250 African migrants have arrived on the shores of Shabwa governorate in southeastern Yemen, according to security sources who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The migrants, believed to have crossed the Gulf of Aden aboard smuggling vessels, landed near coastal areas east of the city of Balhaf late Wednesday. 

Authorities say the group includes men, women, and minors, and that initial assessments suggest they originated from countries in the Horn of Africa.

Local officials have expressed concern over the growing influx of irregular migration along Yemen’s southern coastline, citing humanitarian risks and security challenges. 

The migrants are reportedly being held for screening and humanitarian assistance, pending further coordination with international agencies.

Yemen remains a key transit point for thousands of migrants seeking passage to Gulf countries, despite ongoing conflict and deteriorating conditions. 

Security forces in Shabwa have intensified coastal patrols in recent weeks to curb smuggling operations and prevent further arrivals.
