Somali Embassy in Yemen Resumes Passport Services After Eight-Year Suspension
Aden — The Somali Embassy in Yemen has officially resumed issuing national passports to Somali citizens residing in the country, ending an eight-year suspension that had left thousands without access to essential travel documents.
Ambassador Abdihakin Mohamed Ahmed announced the restoration of passport services during a press briefing in Aden , emphasizing the embassy’s commitment to serving the Somali community in Yemen.
“After nearly eight years, we have resumed issuing passports, which is a fundamental right of every citizen,” he stated. “From now on, we will accept applications from anyone whose Somali citizenship is verified.”
The decision comes in response to long-standing appeals from Somali nationals, particularly students and job seekers, who faced significant challenges due to the lack of valid documentation. Many had been unable to travel, enroll in academic institutions, or access basic services.
The embassy confirmed that it will prioritize transparency and efficiency in processing applications, with strict verification procedures to ensure the integrity of the issuance process. Community leaders in Sana’a and other major cities welcomed the move, describing it as a “major relief” and a “long-awaited victory” for Somali residents in Yemen.
The resumption of passport services marks a critical step in restoring consular support and mobility for Somali citizens abroad, reinforcing the embassy’s role in safeguarding the rights and dignity of its nationals.
