Yemen’s PLC Urges UK to Tighten Measures Against Iranian Arms Smuggling to Houthis
Aden -- The Presidential Leadership Council (PLC) of Yemen has formally called on the United Kingdom to intensify its efforts in curbing the smuggling of Iranian weapons to the Houthi movement, warning that continued arms flows are fueling instability and undermining peace efforts in the region.
In a high-level diplomatic communication delivered to British officials in London, the PLC emphasized the need for stronger maritime enforcement, intelligence coordination, and sanctions implementation to disrupt the networks facilitating the transfer of drones, missiles, and other military equipment to Houthi-controlled areas.
The appeal comes amid growing international concern over the Houthis’ escalating attacks in the Red Sea and their use of Iranian-supplied weaponry, including ballistic missiles and unmanned aerial systems. The PLC stressed that Iran’s continued support for the Houthis violates UN Security Council resolutions and threatens regional shipping lanes and humanitarian access.
Yemeni officials urged the UK to:
- Increase naval patrols and inspections in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
- Support UN-led verification and inspection mechanisms for cargo vessels.
- Expand sanctions on individuals and entities linked to arms trafficking.
- Enhance intelligence-sharing with regional allies to track smuggling routes.
The UK has been a key partner in supporting Yemen’s internationally recognized government and has previously condemned Iranian interference in the conflict. British naval forces have also participated in multinational efforts to secure maritime routes and intercept illicit arms shipments.
This latest diplomatic push reflects the PLC’s broader strategy to rally international support for restoring state authority, protecting civilians, and advancing the UN-led peace process. It also comes as the Houthis continue to defy ceasefire efforts and expand their military capabilities with external backing.
