Yemen Urges Concrete International Measures to Counter Houthi Threat
Aden — Yemen has called on the international community to move beyond statements and adopt firm, practical measures to curb the growing threat posed by the Iran-backed Houthi militia, which continues to destabilize the country and the wider region.
Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly, President Rashad Mohammed Al-Alimi of Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council warned that the Houthis’ escalating aggression—both domestically and internationally—now represents a serious challenge to regional and global security.
He urged world powers to take coordinated action to halt the group’s military expansion, restrict its access to weapons and funding, and hold it accountable for human rights violations.
“The time has come for decisive international action,” Al-Alimi said, emphasizing that mere condemnation is no longer sufficient. He called for increased diplomatic pressure, sanctions targeting Houthi leadership, and stronger support for Yemen’s legitimate government.
The appeal follows a series of Houthi attacks on civilian infrastructure, maritime shipping routes, and border areas, which have drawn international concern. Despite a fragile truce brokered in 2022, violations continue, and peace efforts have stalled.
Yemen’s leadership also reiterated its commitment to a peaceful and inclusive political solution, but stressed that such efforts must be backed by robust international engagement to deter further Houthi escalation.
The United Nations and several member states have acknowledged the urgency of the situation, but concrete steps remain limited. Analysts warn that without stronger global intervention, the conflict could further destabilize the Red Sea corridor and exacerbate humanitarian suffering.
