Yemen : Houthi Militias Launch Raids in Taiz Following Defection of Loyalist Tribal Leader
TAIZ — Houthi militias have launched a wave of security raids in parts of Taiz Governorate following the reported defection of a prominent tribal sheikh who had previously aligned with the group.
Local sources say the campaign targeted homes and gathering places of individuals suspected of sympathizing with the dissident leader, sparking fear and unrest in affected communities.
The tribal figure, whose name has not been officially disclosed, is believed to have severed ties with the Houthis over internal disputes and growing dissatisfaction with the group’s governance and military conduct.
His departure marks a significant blow to Houthi influence in the region, where tribal allegiances play a crucial role in maintaining control.
According to eyewitnesses, armed Houthi units conducted late-night raids in several villages east of Taiz, detaining dozens of residents and confiscating mobile phones and documents.
Families of the detainees have called for their immediate release, accusing the militias of collective punishment and arbitrary arrests.
The raids come amid heightened tensions in Taiz, a city long besieged by Houthi forces and central to Yemen’s broader conflict.
Analysts suggest the defection could signal deeper fractures within the Houthi tribal alliances, especially as economic hardship and military setbacks mount.
Human rights groups have condemned the crackdown, warning that such actions violate basic civil liberties and further destabilize the region. “This campaign of intimidation undermines any prospects for reconciliation or peace,” said one regional observer.
The Houthis have not issued an official statement regarding the raids or the tribal leader’s defection.
However, sources close to the group suggest that internal investigations are underway to assess the extent of the fallout and prevent further defections.
