Yemen Tariq Saleh Meets U.S. Ambassador to Discuss Economic Reforms, Anti-Smuggling Efforts
Aden — In a strategic diplomatic engagement, Tariq Saleh, a senior member of Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council, met with U.S. Ambassador Steven Fagin to review the latest developments in Yemen and explore avenues for enhanced cooperation between the two countries.
The meeting focused on three critical areas:
- Economic Reforms: Saleh and Fagin discussed the ongoing efforts to stabilize Yemen’s economy, including measures to improve the exchange rate of the national currency, strengthen public institutions, and attract international support for reconstruction and development.
- Combating Smuggling: Both sides emphasized the need to intensify efforts to counter arms and goods smuggling, particularly in coastal regions and border areas. Saleh highlighted the importance of joint intelligence sharing and technical support to dismantle trafficking networks that fuel conflict and undermine state authority.
- Maritime Security: The officials addressed the growing threats to Yemen’s territorial waters, especially in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. They agreed on the urgency of enhancing naval patrols and surveillance capabilities to protect shipping lanes and prevent illicit activities.
Ambassador Fagin reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to supporting Yemen’s legitimate government and the Presidential Leadership Council in their efforts to restore stability and uphold sovereignty. He praised the Council’s role in advancing reforms and confronting security challenges.
Saleh, who commands the National Resistance Forces, reiterated the importance of international partnerships in securing Yemen’s future and called for continued U.S. engagement in supporting peace, development, and counterterrorism operations.
The meeting comes amid rising regional tensions and renewed international focus on Yemen’s strategic role in maritime security and humanitarian relief.
